Seattle Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz appeared to avoid serious injury after taking a pitch off his foot Tuesday night. After a brief delay that saw Cruz helped off the field, Ben Gamel was brought in to pinch run for the slugger.
The team announced that X-rays on Cruz came back negative and that he was dealing with a foot contusion, according to Corey Brock of The Athletic. The team will reevaluate the 37-year-old on Wednesday.
On a 1-2 count, the Mariners slugger checked his swing on a slider from Brandon Mann that ended up breaking into the batter's box and catching the top of Cruz's right foot.
Cruz has hit at least 39 home runs in each of the last four seasons and played in no fewer than 152 games in every one of those seasons.
Through 32 games this year, Cruz owns a .240/.324/.463 slash line with seven home runs.
