San Diego has engaged in regular dialogue with Hosmer's agent, Scott Boras, over the last several days, sources told Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
The Padres have been pursuing Hosmer all winter, envisioning the first baseman as a necessary piece to help complete their rebuild.
San Diego and the Kansas City Royals look like the last two teams standing in the race to sign Hosmer. Last week, Royals general manager Dayton Moore called repatriating the 28-year-old his "priority," while Lin reports that the Padres have hosted multiple visits with Hosmer.
Padres first baseman Wil Myers has also expressed a willingness to move to the outfield to accommodate Hosmer. He's reportedly added 20 pounds of muscle in anticipation of the position change, according to Lin.
In January, both the Royals and Padres were said to have made Hosmer separate seven-year contract offers, though Boras has since refuted those reports and called them "inaccurate."
